STERLING, Colo. — Police responded to a recreational center in Sterling Monday after receiving reports regarding a possible sex assault on a child.
Authorities received reports that an adult male has inappropriately touched two children and watched a third shower at the Sterling Recreation Center at 808 Elm St., according to the Sterling Police Department.
Police said the suspect asked to hug a 9-year-old boy. While hugging the child, the suspect allegedly fondled the genitals of the boy. A second child, 10, told police the suspect grabbed him on the shoulder.
Reports also indicated that the male suspect watched an 11-year-old shower — the boy was wearing a swimsuit at the time — and then asked the child if he could hug him. The suspect did not hug or touch the third victim.
As police began their investigation, the suspect was taken into custody for an unrelated incident by a different law enforcement agency.
Sterling Police then identified Gerald Ray Marquardt, 43, as a suspect in the child sex assault case at the recreation center.
On Tuesday, police obtained an arrest warrant for Marquardt, who is a registered sex offender with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office.
Marquardt is being held without bond pending judicial advisement and faces sexual assault on a child and harassment charges, police said.
