LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- Four people were taken to a hospital after a fire broke out in one of the units at the Ridgemoor high-rise apartments Monday morning.

West Metro Fire spokeswoman Michelle French said the fire was started by a resident who was smoking in bed with an oxygen tank.

Smoke could be seen billowing from the complex at 693 Urban Court, which is just north of West Sixth Avenue and west of Simms Street.

Residents could be seen on balconies, some covering the mouths because of the smoke.

The mulitunit fire broke out about 6:30 a.m. and was fought by several agencies. It was brought under control about 7 a.m.

Three residents and a firefighter were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries, and four people were treated at the scene.

Firefighters were going through each unit to assess damage, and the Red Cross has been brought in to help those who have been displaced. Residents are allowed in the building except those on the sixth floor.

The Red Cross said 10 to 20 people are evacuated from the building.
