Suspect killed outside Denver funeral home in 2nd deadly officer-involved shooting of day

DENVER — Police were investigating their second officer-involved shooting within about four hours of each other in Denver Wednesday night. This one happened outside the Romero Family Funeral Home near Tejon and I-70.

Officers confirmed one person was killed after getting shot multiple times. One female officer was hurt but not by gunfire. The nature or severity of her injuries were not released.

A funeral for a young man was taking place in the 4500 block of Tejon when witnesses say they heard multiple gun shots in the parking lot.

A police spokesman at the scene says officers were attempting to apprehend a 21-year-old fugitive with felony warrants. He was wanted on two felony auto theft warrants and officers had been tracking him all day. He happened to be attending the funeral Wedneaday Evening.

The spokesman says the was in a moving vehicle at the time of the confrontation, and that initial indications were he did not display a weapon. There was a confrontation and four police officers shot the suspect.

A large crowd was held at the scene so that officers could interview them about what they saw and heard. There were clearly a number of people upset by what transpired. Police said they developed a witness list of 45 people plus the four officers involved.

Police asked RTD to bring a bus to the scene. Witnesses were taken to police headquarters to be interviewed.

Earlier in the day, Denver police shot and killed a suspect following an undercover drug buy near South Platte River Drive and West Florida Avenue.
