CDOT anticipates heavy traffic along I-70 for holiday weekend
The Colorado Department of Transportation said it expects heavy traffic and increased travel times along the Interstate 70 mountain corridor over the holiday weekend.
In 2013, travel times for motorists driving westbound along I-70 hit 97 minutes in the late afternoon hours of July 3, CDOT said. And, on July 4, 2013, travel times increased to 100 minutes during the noon hour.
The department said it anticipates similar numbers this year during the Fourth of July weekend, expecting traffic delays to begin Thursday.
CDOT said the Westbound Twin Tunnels project will take one more blast at 7 a.m. Thursday, before taking a break for the holiday weekend. Traffic will stop for five minutes before the blast, CDOT added.
The department expects the heaviest travel day to be on Sunday afternoon, along eastbound I-70, as motorists make their way back into the city.
CDOT continues to implement its “Change Your Peak Time” campaign to encourage motorists to travel at non-peak hours.
