City Star Brewing may be relatively new, having just opened in May 2012, and relatively small being located in Berthoud, which has a population of just over 5,000. But they emerged out of a tournament that featured each and every one of Colorado’s 200-plus breweries.

And they notched some impressive head-to-head victories in the tournament’s Knockout Stages against well-known breweries from some of the state’s biggest brewery hubs, including Upslope (Boulder), New Belgium (Fort Collins) and Dry Dock (Aurora).
When they reached the finals, City Star faced another little-brewery-that-could, Dad and Dude’s Breweria in Aurora, but they came out victorious once again, winning by a final vote tally of 2,117 to 1,403.
In total, City Star collected 6,301 votes through the Group Stage and the five rounds of the Knockout Stages. It was more than any other brewery in the competition.

As noted in Monday’s championship profile of both City Star and Dad and Dude’s, Berthoud’s only brewery attributed a great deal of its votes to the Colorado Springs-based National Mill Dog Rescue, which works to raise awareness about the dangers of puppy mills.
City Star supports the non-profit with an annual event called “Hops and Harely.”
Who’s Harely? A cute little one-eye chihuahua who belongs to the parents of brewery co-owner Whitney Way. Both Harley and National Mill Dog Rescue have expansive followings on Facebook, and both used those platforms to support City Star in the Colorado Brewery Cup.
A big thanks is also due to Dad and Dude’s Breweria, who fought hard in the championship and went to great lengths to support the first Colorado Brewery Cup.
Breweria co-owner Mason Hembree, who’s getting ready to release a new line of canned beer and open a second location in Littleton, has vowed to come back even stronger in 2018.
Thanks also to the hundreds of other breweries across the state who made an effort to participate in this first Colorado Brewery Cup. We hope you all had as much fun as we did!
