DENVER — Police put out an alert on Friday advising owners of earlier-model Hondas that their cars are becoming a favorite target of thieves.

In particular, Denver Police said they have seen a spike in the number of car thefts pertaining to 1990s model Hondas.

During the months of May and June of 2014, Denver Police said 156 Honda Civics and Accords were reported stolen, compared to 59 during the same time frame in 2013

“Denver overall has seen a decline in auto thefts,” police wrote in a press release. “But there is still concern about the increase of Hondas being stolen.”

Police advised owners of these Honda models to take theft prevention measures as soon as possible. Such steps could include:

  • Installing a car alarm
  • Fixing a lock device to the steering wheel, column, or brake
  • Ensuring car doors are locked
  • Parking in well lit or busy areas
  • Don’t leave keys and other valuables in your car
  • Never leave a running car unattended
