COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Authorities have arrested a 51-year-old woman on suspicion of unlawful ownership of a dangerous dog after her pit bull attacked a 19-month-old child.

Sue Tacket was arrested Monday, police said.

The child is still recovering in the hospital from the attack, which happened Sunday in a King Soopers parking lot.

According to police, three separate families traveling across the country set up camp in the parking lot on E. 62nd Avenue.

Police say the 90-pound dog was tied to a pole and when the child tried petting it, the dog attacked.

When officers arrived, they restrained the dog using catch poles. The dog was taken to the Adams County Animal Shelter, where it died from asphyxiation.

Friends of the victim said the child was seriously injured and underwent six hours of reconstructive surgery at Children's Hospital. Part of the surgery included rebuilding his lower jaw, which was torn off.
