Flooding forces Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch to be evacuated second time in week

HUERFANO COUNTY, Colo. –For the second time in just more than a week, the Spanish Peaks Scout Ranch had to be evacuated because of flooding, the Huerfano County Office of Emergency Management said Thursday.

More than 150 scouts and staff members fled the ranch about 9:45 p.m. Wednesday and taken to the Huerfano County Community Center in Walsenburg, where the Red Cross is helping.

There were five minor injuries and they were taken to Spanish Peaks Regional Hospital. Most of the scouts are from Kansas.

The scouts are not the same ones who were at the camp last week when it had to be evacuated because of flooding.

An evaluation of damage and the weather forecast will determine if the scouts can return to the camp.
