DENVER -- A crash involving an SUV and a small car shut down the intersection of Colfax Avenue and Speer Boulevard and sent seven people to a hospital early Monday morning.
Denver Police detectives say the accident occurred about 2:30 a.m. and said the driver of a Ford Explorer was traveling at a high rate of speed eastbound on Colfax and failed to stop for a red light at Speer, careening into the smaller SUV, which was traveling southbound on Speer.
The Explorer was flipped on its side and a smaller SUV was nearly split in two. A piece of the car was sitting several feet away from the car.
Detectives say four people were in the Explorer and three in the smaller vehicle and described the accident as "violent." Two people in the smaller SUV have serious injuries. Witnesses say racing might have been involved, but detectives are still investigating that aspect of the accident.
The driver of the Explorer is in police custody for vehicular assault.
The intersection reopened to traffic about 5:45 a.m.
