Police: 73-year-old man kills grandson in Fort Collins then kills himself

Police at the scene of a double shooting in Fort Collins.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — A tight knit family and neighborhood searching for answers after a grandfather reportedly shot and killed his 26 year old grandson and then killed himself.

Fort Collins Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting in the 6300 block of Thompson Dr. in Southwest Fort Collins on Thursday afternoon.

“This is surprising,” said Bryan Samstel, who lives on the street that was blocked by police tape on Thursday afternoon. “It’s a tight neighborhood. We have picnics and stuff together so this is really shocking. I would never had thought it’d be this family.”

Fort Collins police responded just before 1 p.m. after a woman called to report her husband, 73 year old Gene Kapperman, shot and killed their 26-year-old grandson, Brandon Kapperman. Gene Kapperman then reportedly turned the gun on himself.

“The grandson and (his dad) live over in this house (down the street),” Samstel said. “So they were always doing stuff at the house together.”

On Thursday, Gene Kapperman’s pickup sat at the intersection between the families homes surrounded by police tape. Police won’t say what might have led up to the shooting or what they believe happened in those final moments.

Regardless, Samstel says his thoughts are with the entire family.

“Always was impressed by how close the family was, so this is very shocking,” Samstel said.

Fort Collins police say this is their first homicide of the year, and only the second in the area in the past two years.
