AURORA, Colo. — A major construction project starts Thursday night that will have a big impact on some commuters using I-225.
The northbound I-225 ramp at Parker Road will be closed beginning 10 p.m. Thursday, July 31. It will not reopen until Thursday, August 7 at 10 p.m.
“That on-ramp will be closed for an entire week while we reconstruct the on-ramp and re-pave it,” explains CDOT spokeswoman Amy Ford.
The construction at I-225 and Parker Road is part of a bigger road project to expand I-225 to four lanes in each direction. The closure will likely cause big delays for drivers.
“Every day it seems it changes so it’s really hard to track what roads are closed what days,” says John Gonglach of Centennial. He, like many others, uses I-225 to get to work every day. Now everyone will have to find an alternate route.
CDOT has set up a detour. Drivers can go north on Peoria Street from Parker Road, then go east on Iliff Avenue to get to northbound I-225.
While it may be an inconvenience for a lot of drivers, CDOT says the week-long closure is better in the long-run.
“It’s actually less of an impact for us to shut it down, get in there, get our guys in there and reconstruct it as quickly as we possibly can versus longer delays,” Ford says.
CDOT does not have an estimate on how much the closure will impact commute times. Officials advise drivers in that area to allow plenty of extra time during morning and evening rush hour.
