Mother arrested after 2-month-old daughter dies from suspected child abuse
DENVER — A mother was under arrest Thursday night after her 2-month-old died of suspected child abuse.
Denver police said Kelsy Newell-Skinner, 21, was in custody.
The infant girl was taken to Parker Adventist Hospital and then transported to Children’s Hospital in Aurora on Sunday according to the arrest affidavit.
The affidavit said the little girl was brain dead and had many injuries including bruising on her head, fractured ribs, possible bit marks on her thigh and a swollen left eye.
The affidavit says the suspect sent text messages to her ex-boyfriend, who is the father of three other children with her, asking him to come to her apartment at 10700 East Dartmouth in Denver. This was at about noon Sunday.
He received another text saying that “She must have been very drunk last night because she just woke up and the baby has been beaten,” the affidavit says. “Another text message advised that the baby’s head was banged up and her eyes were bruised and swollen shut. An additional text from Kelsy said that she did not even remember last night and she felt horrible.”
The suspect’s mother was the person who took the infant to the hospital.
The baby died Thursday.
