A British photographer is in a battle with Wikimedia over a copyright claim he made regarding a “monkey selfie.”

According to the Telegraph newspaper, David Slater was in Indonesia in 2011 when a crested black macaque stole his camera. The money started taking photos (most of them were blurred shots of the ground) and one of them because a famous selfie that was featured in publications all over the world.

Wikimedia published the photo online claiming it is in the public domain.

Slater argues that the photograph belongs to him and Wikimedia is jeopardizing his income.

However, Wikimedia claims the photo was actually taken by the monkey and that animal is the actual copyright holder.

In the caption of the photo Wikimedia says the author is “The monkey on the photo.”

Slater is prepared to take the issue to court.
