DILLON, Colo. — An apparent microburst struck Lake Dillon during a boating event Thursday, sending dozens of people splashing into the chilly water.
About 30 sailboats were on the reservoir for the Buccaneer 18 North American Championship, part of the Dillon Regatta, Lake Dillon Fire Rescue PIO Steve Lipsher said. The microburst happened about 5:30 p.m., capsizing 12 boats, he said. Each boat held two people.
Rescuers were able to pull everyone from the water and no serious injuries were reported, officials said. Boats were still being retrieved about 7 p.m.
A microburst is a weather phenomenon wherein a sudden, sharp downdraft impacts an area during a thunderstorm.
Lake Dillon has a reputation of being very difficult to sail on because of the changing wind patterns in the mountains.
