SPRING, Texas — A Texas mother says she was kicked out of a pizza restaurant for changing her baby at the table. She says there was no changing table in the restroom, but the restaurant’s owners say that’s no excuse.
Miranda Sowers has three children, including 4-month-old Reagan. But she had quite the hcallenge when she was alone with her three girls at Brother’s Pizza Express and took Reagan to the restroom.
“Looked around, saw there was absolutely nowhere to lay a baby other than the floor, so I walked back out and thought I have to figure something else out,” Sowers said.
With no changing table and to avoid the hassle of taking everyone back to the minivan, Sowers said what she did next was her last resort.
“So I thought, you know what, I’ve got my own changing pad, she’s tiny, she fits right here on the chair, so I laid her down quickly, quietly changed her diaper,” Sowers said.
But it wasn’t quickly and quietly, according to the employees, who say the restaurant was full.
“I don’t want to lose all these other customers because they see a dirty diaper,” said Bessa Lala, who runs Brother’s Pizza Express with her brother Donny.
She said people were complaining; one regular customer sitting close by even sent a text about what was happening.
“As soon as you start opening the diaper, people start complaining about the smell of the diaper,” Donny Lala said. “The last thing I want is a customer throwing up.”
Sowers said no one saw her change the diaper, but she and her girls were given their food in to-go containers and asked to leave. Sowers has filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and the restaurant stands behind its reaction, knowing it lost at least one family as customers.
