DENVER — With the NFL season about to begin, Forbes is out with its list of the best fans based on five criteria — and it has the Broncos as No. 2 behind the Green Bay Packers.
Forbes’ criteria included hometown crowd reach (defined by Nielsen Scarborough as a percentage of the metropolitan area population that watched, attended and/or listened to a game in the past year); three years worth of TV ratings; three years of stadium attendance based on capacity reached; three years of merchandise sales; and social media reach.
The Packers scored the highest in all categories except TV rankings (second) and merchandise (seventh) to grab the top spot.
The Broncos snapped the overall No. 2 spot by ranking first in stadium attendance; second in merchandise; fourth in TV audience and social media; and fifth in hometown crowd.
Forbes surmises the Broncos’ high ranking comes from Peyton Manning being with the team since 2012 after it had three years of below-capacity attendance. Forbes says Sports Authority Field at Mile High has had 100.7 percent and 101 percent capacity the past years with Manning. The Broncos went 13-3 each season, reaching the Super Bowl last season.
