WESTMINSTER, Colo. — The office of 17th Judicial District Attorney Dave Young will not bring charges against a security guard, who shot and killed a man after a confrontation at an apartment complex earlier this month.

The DA’s office said the shooting of David Ludewig, 24, was in self defense and justified.

The shooting happened at the Sunset Ridge Apartments (8300 N. Sheridan Blvd.) in the early-morning hours of Aug. 2 after Ludewig had a confrontation with a security guard. The security guard told Westminster Police he saw a handgun in Ludewig’s hand and tried to retreat into cover.

When Ludewig raised the weapon, the security guard fired at him. Jacob Thompson, the victim’s brother-in-law,  told FOX31 Denver’s Greg Nieto that Ludewig was armed with an Airsoft gun — which only fires plastic pellets.

“It was a bad decision, a terrible decision, but I don’t think that it warranted his death,” one of Ludewig’s relatives said earlier this month.
