Suspect shot by police officer in east Denver

DENVER -- One man was injured late Sunday night after exchanging gunfire with an officer, the Denver Police Department said.

The shooting happened about 9:30 p.m. at Olive Street and East 33rd Avenue in east Denver.

Police said officers made a traffic stop when two men inside the vehicle bailed out and ran.

Officers chased the suspects through the neighborhood, called in backup and a helicopter. Not long after that, one suspect was found and shots were fired.

"There was a short foot pursuit and we established a perimeter in the area," Denver police spokesman Doug Schepman said. "A short time later at 33rd and Olive, officers encountered one of the suspects and there was an exchange of gunfire."

The suspect was taken to a hospital with critical but nonlife-threatening injuries. The other suspect was found at 36th Avenue and Oneida Street, and was taken into custody.

No officers were injured, police said.
