Aurora police officer captures caiman on the loose

AURORA, Colo. — You don’t see this every day, especially in landlocked Colorado, but an Aurora police officer captured a caiman that got loose.

Sarah Butler Mills posted to the Aurora Police Department’s Facebook page a thank you for the officer removing the “baby crocodile” she found after returning home.

“Officers like him are a real blessing, he was friendly, funny, and an obvious animal lover!” Mills wrote.

Police wrote that the caiman was “likely a pet as they are not native to Aurora.”

“If you are going to own reptiles please be a responsible owner to keep them and everyone else safe,” police wrote.

A caiman is an “alligatorid crocodilian” that are found in Central American and South America. Their maximum weight is about 88 pounds.

Police turned over the caiman to Aurora Animal Control.
