Armed suspect shot by SWAT team dies after 3-hour Lakewood standoff
LAKEWOOD, Colo. — An armed suspect has died after being shot by SWAT team members during a standoff early Saturday morning, the Lakewood Police Department said.
Police responded to a parking lot in the 100 block of Sheridan Boulevard about 4:20 a.m. to locate a man wanted on seven warrants.
After finding a vehicle in the area, police found the wanted man, who produced what was believed to be a weapon, police said.
Officers backed away and set up containment on the vehicle. After making phone contact with the man, he said told police he was armed.
The West Metro SWAT team was brought in and at about 7:20 a.m., it moved in to recontact with the man.
Shots were fired and the man suffered gunshot wounds. He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he later died. No officers were injured.
Police have not released the man’s name.
Sheridan Boulevard was closed in both directions between West First and West Bayaud avenues as the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Correctional Emergency Response Team investigated.
The road reopened just after noon.
