Make sure kids’ school backpacks aren’t too heavy

DENVER -- Students are back at school this month. Some may already be complaining about their heavy backpacks.

Each year at least 14,000 children get treatment for backpack related injuries.

Kim Posey shows us what to look for to prevent injuries and keep your child healthy in her video report.

Here are a few tips that can help:

  • Kids should use both straps over shoulders
  • Use a waist strap
  • Use a backpack with lots of pockets to help distribute weight better
  • Total weight should not be more than 10-15 percent of your child's body weight
