Suspect gets away after shots fired, crash sends vehicle into Edgewater yard

EDGEWATER, Colo. -- An armed burglary suspect got away after shots were fired, and a crash sent a vehicle through a fence and into a yard early Wednesday morning, the Edgewater Police Department said.

Police responded to a report of seven shots fired about 1:50 a.m. just north of West 20th Avenue and Fenton Street, and when officers arrived, they found a crash scene.

Police said the suspect was driving a stolen Ford Excursion out of Wheat Ridge, and it ran a stop sign and into a red Saturn. The Saturn was sent into a yard and through a fence, police said.

Three men in the Saturn got out and chased the suspect, but he managed to get away. Police set up a perimeter and spotted the suspect several times, and a K-9 unit was brought in, but they were unable to find the man. The search has been halted.

Police said blood was found inside the Excursion and they believe the suspect is injured. A stolen handgun was also recovered at the crash scene. Police said the suspect was wearing red shorts and a white shirt.

"It was a loud bang," said Molly Fernow, who rents the home where the Saturn was sent by the crash. "It's a little bit scary, but it's one of those things that just happens."

No injuries were reported among the three occupants of the Saturn.
