Deputies initially tried to arrest Havens Tuesday night in Gilcrest, the sheriff’s office said.

Havens took off in a van and headed west on county roads, then went south on Highway 60 to Highway 85.

Havens was just south of Highway 85 when he started driving the wrong way in the northbound lanes, according to the sheriff’s office.

Deputies called off the chase because it “presented a great risk to the public.”

Later, a van matching the description of the suspect’s van was found stuck in a gravel pit west of Highway 85 near Weld County Road 6.

Deputies detained two women who had been passengers in the van, but the driver was already gone.

Early Wednesday morning, there was a crash at Highway 85 and County Road 6. Investigators believe Havens carjacked the Chevy HHR after the crash. It’s not clear if the Chevy was involved in the crash or belonged to someone who witnesses the crash.

Havens headed north on Highway 85 at speeds of about 100 mph, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies deployed stop sticks at Weld County Road 46 but they were unsuccessful.

Deputies called off the chase near Lasalle because heavy traffic in the area and the potential risk to the public.

The suspect was last seen travelling east from Lasalle, the sheriff’s office stated. There have been reported sightings in Evans and Greeley.

If you see the vehicle or the suspect, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office is asking you to call 911 immediately.
