5-year-old girl rescued from closet in early-morning Lakewood house fire

LAKEWOOD, Colo. -- A father and his daughter were hospitalized after a fire raced through their home early Friday morning, West Metro Fire said.

Firefighters had to act quickly to rescue the 5-year-old girl who was trapped inside and was found inside a closet on the second floor. She then was carried out by firefighters through a front window.

The fire broke out about 12:30 a.m. in the 9900 block of Vassar Way.

When crews arrived, there was plenty of smoke and flames, The mother and son were able to escape with little problems.

But the girl was hiding in a second-floor closet, and firefighters jumped into action and were able to get her to safety before part of the home collapsed.

The girl and her father were taken to Swedish Medical Center but are expected to be OK.

It appears the fire might have started in the back of the home. The cause is still under investigation.
