Man walking down Highway 287 shoots at police, officer not injured

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. — A man walking down Highway 287 shot at a Boulder County Sheriff’s deputy around 5:15 p.m. on Saturday. Police say it happened near Highway 287 and Oxford Road, south of Longmont.

The deputy was not injured, according to police.

Police tell Channel 2 the man was walking down Highway 287 with no shirt and a gun acting aggressively toward motorists.

When the officer responded, the suspect immediately started firing at the deputy in her SUV. The deputy returned fire and the suspect was hit multiple times, police said.

The suspect was transported to an area hospital with gunshot wounds, according to police. His condition is unknown, at this time.

There was only one deputy involved in this incident.

Highway 287 is closed in the area from Niwot Road to Oxford Road while police investigate. There is no estimated time of reopening.

Police expect the highway to remain closed in the area for most of Saturday night.
