When it comes to cardio, logging time on the treadmill or elliptical can be anything but fun. So, here are some ideas to get in a good sweat, and maybe even a smile.
You’ve got to mix it up to both feel the burn and keep boredom from setting in. “For most people, the more fun they have, the more likely they’ll be to stick with it.”
Fitness expert Doug Quinlivan from Ascent Fitness suggests jumping rope. It seems simple, but it’s effective. “Good cardio, good core, good shoulders.”
He said it’s one of the best cardio workouts you can do since you can vary the height of your jump and the speed.
“The idea is to spike your heart-rate up.” Aim for 160 beats per minute, or more, he said.
Another one that’s really effective; boxing.
Doug said, “First of all, it’s a lot of fun. It’s a great stress reliever.”
You can either use a heavy bag or grab a partner and some focus mitts. Either way, it’s a challenging workout that will definitely get your heart-rate up.
“There’s a lot of research lately that shows shorter amounts of higher intensity training is better for you than longer amounts of moderate to low intensity training,” Doug said.
And, it’s fun!
Another one that’s sure to test your limits, the battle ropes.
It’s not easy, but you’ll feel it.
Doug said you have to keep your core and body still while raising your arms to shoulder height. Then slap each rope to the ground.
“Anything you can do to take your mind off the fact that you’re exercising is going to be really good.”
