Fire that destroyed apartment building started in outside bush

ARAPAHOE COUNTY, Colo. — Fire investigators said the fire that destroyed an apartment building on East Yale Avenue Monday afternoon started in a juniper bush outside the building.

The Cunningham Fire Protection District investigators said they could not determine the source of ignition because of a lack of evidence. So the official cause of the fire is listed as undetermined.

The fire scene was turned over to the property manager Tuesday. The Hunters Run apartments are at 7777 East Yale Avenue in Arapahoe County.

Cunningham Fire experts said junipers are among the least fire-resistant plants you can use in landscaping. They have thin evergreen foliage which burns quickly because of its texture. They also contain flammable oils, identifiable by their strong odor and sticky sap.

The recommendation is to keep them at least 30 feet away from your home or other buildings if you plant them in your landscape. Keeping the junipers watered regularly and pruned can help make the situation safer.
